A prominent Malaysian doctor has claimed that gay sex and masturbation increase the body’s susceptibility to the H1N1 virus, better known as swine flu. An article in the state-run newspaper Bernama describes Dr VM Palaniappan as an eminent practitioner of complementary therapy, and presents his advice in an approving tone.
Dr Palaniappan, a former associate professor of ecology at Universiti Malaya, said that homosexual activities and masturbation caused the body to develop friction heat, which in turn produced acid and made the body hyperacidised. “Thus, the body becomes an easy target for H1N1,” he said, although reassuringly he emphasized that “normal sexual union” between members of the opposite sex was absolutely safe.
Gays and lesbians have been banned from appearing in state-controlled media in Malaysia, and sodomy is illegal throughout the country, punishable by caning or prison terms of 20 years, but in two of its states homosexual acts between consenting adults carry the death penalty.
In other news Professor says ‘We have created the first vaginal gel designed to prevent movement of the AIDS virus. This is unique. There’s nothing like it’
A vaginal ‘liquid molecular condom’ that solidifies in contact with semen and traps particles wider than 50 nanometres, which includes the HIV virus, is being developed at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, New Scientist has revealed. It’s hoped that the invention will protect women in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, where, in some age groups, as many as 60% are already infected with HIV.
Before sex, women would insert a vaginal gel which remains in liquid form while in contact with acidity levels normally found in the vagina, but when it encounters semen, which is slightly alkaline, it becomes a semisolid and, apart from acting as contraceptive, traps viruses including herpes and papilloma, as well as HIV.
Patrick Kiser, an associate professor of bioengineering at the university, whose team has helped develop the gel, said: “We have created the first vaginal gel designed to prevent movement of the AIDS virus. This is unique. There’s nothing like it. We did it to develop technologies that can enable women to protect themselves against HIV without approval of their partner, particularly in resource-poor areas of the world like sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia.”
Dr Kiser estimated that if all goes well, clinical trials of the gel could begin in as little as three years, with a marketable version available several years on, and eventually it may be possible to incorporate an antiviral drug so it both blocks HIV movement and prevents the virus from replicating.

My part of this paper is focusing on organizations that help people (ex: low income families or people on welfare) with the HIV/AIDS virus who can not afford to pay for treatments. So far I have found only one organization but I mostly have found organizations that are reaching out in Africa. PLEASE HELP!

Post a comment below...HIV AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus- Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome)
HIV AIDS – The name itself is horrifying! Even hearing the news of somebody infected by the HIV gives goose bumps.
HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. In India the first HIV case was detected in 1986 in a female sex worker in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Since then, the number of people infected with this virus is increasing at an alarming rate. As per Reuters (March 2010), around 2.5 million people are living with HIV virus in India, making India among the top three countries with the highest number of HIV cases.
HIV outbreak is more severe in South (Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka) and North-East India (Manipur & Nagaland). As per a research in April 2010, Maharashtra has witnessed the highest number of new AIDS cases in last 3 years i.e. 25% of total people infected in India. Also, HIV profusion is greater in males than in females (60:40) and in the age group of 15-40 years. Not only this, as per UNICEF, around 30,000 babies are born with HIV virus every year in India.
Having a closer look at the numbers above, it has become indispensable to take drastic measures to kill the evil in its bud. And for this the foremost step is to educate people about the syndrome because even today people infected with this deadly ailment face humiliation, irrational distort and prejudice everyday by our society. They are facing brutal onslaught and are being spurned by their family and community. In order to evade this, World AIDS Day (which was started in 1988) is celebrated every year on December 01 to raise awareness about HIV AIDS and fight discrimination. NACO (National AIDS Control Organization) was also set up in 1992 to administer the formulation of policies and control programs relating to HIV and AIDS.
Since precaution is always better than cure, the following steps/measures can prevent you from being infected by HIV virus:
Educate yourself and others about HIV AIDS
Avoid unprotected sex
Always use fresh needle for injections
If you are HIV positive, following points should be kept in mind:
Follow safe sex practices
Do not share your syringes & needles, razor, tooth brush etc with others
Do not donate blood
If you are pregnant, get regular checkups done so that the baby does not get infected by the virus

Aids: Symptoms and Treatment of Aids
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome: AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make “antibodies,” special molecules to fight HIV. Many people are HIV-positive but don’t get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don’t cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. The virus, which is transmitted from one individual to another through the exchange of body fluids (such as blood or semen), attacks white blood cells, thereby causing the body to lose its capacity to ward off infection. As a result, many AIDS patients die of opportunistic infections that strike their debilitated bodies.
Symptoms of AIDS
Depression is one of the first symptoms of Aids, and of course, can be mistaken for the regular blahs or a temporary mood. However, depression is more profound than sadness and includes lethargy and a lack of interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
Diarrhea thrush or a bad taste in one’s mouth and a white coating on the tongue or the gums, these problems occur because the body is no longer able to fight off minor infections and the patient is more vulnerable to microbes.
Rapid weight loss and lip dystrophy are symptoms of aids that affect the proper distribution of body fats. One’s arms may be bony while there may be buildups of fat on the stomach or behind the neck. This happens because the HIV virus attacks the mitochondria, or the cells which digest fats.
Patients with AIDS have had their immune system depleted by HIV and are very susceptible to such opportunistic infections. Common symptoms are fevers, sweats (particularly at night), swollen glands, chills, weakness, and weight loss.
The symptoms of AIDS are primarily the result of infections that do not normally develop in individuals with healthy immune systems. These are called opportunistic infections.
Respiratory Symptoms – Some of the most serious symptoms of HIV involve the respiratory system. Symptoms associated with breathing and respiration usually occur later in course of the disease. Unfortunately, many people’s first symptom of HIV involves the respiratory system, illustrating why HIV testing is so important. Any cough or shortness of breath could be a sign of bacterial pneumonia or pneumocystis.
Treatment of AIDS
Antiretroviral treatment for HIV infection consists of drugs which work against HIV infection itself by slowing down the replication of HIV in the body. For antiretroviral treatment to be effective for a long time, it has been found that you need to take more than one antiretroviral drug at a time. This is what is known as Combination Therapy. The term Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) is used to describe a combination of three or more anti-HIV drugs. This has been highly beneficial to many HIV-infected individuals since its introduction in 1996 when the protease inhibitor-based HAART initially became available. Current optimal HAART options consist of combinations (or “cocktails”) consisting of at least three drugs belonging to at least two types, or “classes,” of antiretroviral agents.
Prevention are based on avoiding exposure to the virus or, failing that, an antiretroviral treatment directly after a highly significant exposure, called post-exposure prophylaxis PEP has a very demanding four week schedule of dosage. It also has very unpleasant side effects including diarrhea, malaise, nausea and fatigue.
