Three Key Differences Between Private HIV Clinics And NHS Testing

If you’re thinking of getting an HIV test, you may be wondering whether your best option is to go private or visit an NHS clinic.

Both have their benefits, of course. While you may not have to pay for treatment at an NHS clinic, you will have to pay at a private clinic. However, opting for private HIV testing does offer a few distinct advantages.

Here are three key points to think about before making your decision:

1) If your GP knows, it could affect your insurance

Something that many people are unaware of is that certain medical records can be shared with insurance companies. If you visit your GP to request STD testing, it will be added to your records.

In some cases, life or mortgage insurance providers are allowed access to this information. Clearly, this could have an effect on your premiums or even your eligibility for cover.

According to HIV charity The Terrence Higgins Trust, it is possible to protect some information when visiting your GP, but this is dependent on knowing your doctor well and discussing the issue in depth.

If you go straight to a GUM (genitourinary medicine) clinic, then you do have the option to remain anonymous. Yet, for many people, the first port of call is still the GP.

The crucial thing to understand is that any tests performed at a private clinic do not have to be added to your medical record.

2) You can choose a time and avoid long waits

While NHS GUM clinics have improved in recent years, waiting times are still far higher than their private counterparts.

For example, the target for many council areas is to offer 90% of people an appointment within 48hrs. In the cases where a GUM clinic offers a walk-in service the waiting times can be up to several hours.

(This makes it much harder to keep your visit secret by nipping out in your lunch hour.)

According to the sexual health charity GMFA, it can often take a week to secure an appointment. You may then have to sit in the waiting room for long period. GMFA also recommend phoning ahead for GUM walk-in bookings and preparing yourself for a wait of at least 3 hours.

Private clinics on the other hand offer more flexible opening hours, often including evenings and weekends. That makes it easier to incorporate a walk-in test into your normal schedule.

3) You don’t have to wait 3 months before testing

In many cases, NHS GUM clinics only offer the HIV antibody test. This checks for the presence of antibodies in the blood – but it is only effective for confirming infection that took place three months prior.

If you suspect you may be HIV positive, that’s a long time to wait for confirmation.

Private clinics offer a greater range of options. This includes the p24 antigen test – which is accurate in detecting infection that occurred just four weeks beforehand. Some clinics even offer the HIV PCR test which can detect infection from as little as 10 days prior.

You’re also more likely to receive your results within 24hrs at private clinics, which means less of an agonising wait for you.

Overall, the decision between a private and an NHS HIV clinic comes down to your personal preference and the location of the surgery. However, before you make your decision, consider the above points. They could help you avoid stress, get treated sooner and even help you maintain confidentiality.

Aids (Acquired immune system deficiency syndrome) is a group of disease or condition that result from the suppression of the immune system related to infection. Human immuno deficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of aids. This virus belong to the family retrovirus.
Aids is one of the most important public health problem world wide at the start of 21st century. It is first recognized in June 1981 in USA and HIv-I was isolated at the end of 1983. Millions are now infected world wide once infected individuals remain infected for life.
HIV target the lymphocytes (immune cell) having CD4 Ag receptor.
Loss of T4 lymphocytes effects defenses against virus, fungi, parasites & Mycobacteria.

How HIV Spread:
HIV spread by exchange of body fluids such as semen blood and blood products. Most commonly spread by sexual contact with an infected person.
It is spread by sharing needles or syringes which has been exposed to the blood of infected individual (Mostly drug addicts)
It is also transmitted from an infected mother to her baby either before or during child birth or breast feeding.
Symptoms:
Once people is infected with HIV usually remain asymptomatic for year approximately 10 years between exposure & development of AIDS.
Symptoms are characterized in the following category.

Within 1to 3 week after infection people feel flue like symptoms such as fever, headache, nausea, night sweat, fatigue, rash.
Second phase is symptom free phase that can last ten years or more. In this period person remain in good condition.
In the third phase CD4- T cells fall rapidly, lymph nodes under arm and in the neck become swell and opportunistic infections also develop.
In the 4th phase the immune systems of patient destroy rapidly, weight loss occurs due to anorexia, vomiting, nausea.
In advanced AIDS phase the number of CD4 T cell become very low. Death occurs due to severe life threating opportunistic infection and cancer within two years the most common opportunistic infection in AIDS patient due to protozoa, fungi, bacteria and virus.
AIDS associated cancer include Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Kaposi’s sarcoma, cervical cancer, anogenital cancer etc.

Prevention:
Since there is yet no successful vaccination against HIV, so prevention will depend upon effective precautions.

Always use a sterile, disposable needle and syringe for each patient.
Before reused syringes and needles should be disinfect, clean and strile.
Screening donated blood for HIV.
Discouraging professional blood donor.
By organizing during rehabilitation
Most HIV infections are transmitted through sex with an infected partner so it can be prevented by having only one uninfected sexual partner.
Educate children about HIV before they become sexually active.
Educating women about HIV.

The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income According to UNICEF, 25,000 children die each day due to poverty; “quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death.” Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted. The regions that account for the bulk of the deficit are South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. If current trends continue, the Millennium Development Goals target of halving the proportion of underweight children will be missed by 30 million children, largely because of slow progress in Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Infectious diseases continue to blight the lives of the poor across the world. An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, with 3 million deaths in 2004. Smoking Restrictions And Tobacco Legislation In Africa

President Yoweri Museveni affirmed that in Uganda there is one Tobacco Company that provides almost one-sixteenth of Uganda’s total tax revenue and offers different jobs to more than half million people in a country that needs so much any kinds of jobs. The company is helping the children that are infected with AIDS and the victims that have suffered from the war.

In Uganda there is an antismoking activist and a well known lawyer, Phillip Karugaba. He has another opinion about the tobacco company. He affirms that if there were 1,000 B.A.T.’s there would be no more population in Africa. He is a person that tries to help Africa follow the same rules like the entire world regarding smoking. B.A.T. is such a powerful and big company that is not considered to be a monster, but this is only for a while, he said.

British American Tobacco is located in London but of course it has subsidiaries in Africa and in countries from all over the world. Smoking in Africa is still allowed on a lot of domestic airlines. In restaurants and bars where people are smoking too. There are a few hospitals that allow smoking a cigarette if they want. In Africa smoking is less controlled than in other countries. South Africa, with sub-Saharan Africa’s is very strong in economy in comparison with Uganda which is far behind and it relies on the foreign economical assistance.

Because in many African countries is a lack of tobacco legislation, these countries are a target for a lot of tobacco companies. British American Tobacco is the second biggest cigarette manufacturer after Philip Morris. Many companies that have their tobacco business in Africa have tried everything possible to maintain Africa a smoking zone. But even though they have tried so hard to do this, smoking bans appear in that part of the world, slowly but surely.

Mr. Karugaba’s ordered the country’s National Environmental Management Authority to make smoking restrictions in public places; these bans have to be enforced within a year. B.A.T asked if they could participate at the first meeting but they were not allowed to do that.

Anti tobacco advocates affirm that the only goal that Tobacco Companies have is how to regulate the tobacco market. In Uganda started to put warning labels about how dangerous is smoking on the cigarette packs.
Mr. Karugaba is trying to find a court order that would make these smoking restrictions more severe and maximize the purpose of the warnings. On the warning labels there was written: ”Ministry of Health warning: Cigarette smoking can be harmful to your health.”

In the late 1980’s British American Tobacco said to the policy makers that they don’t believe that cigarette is harmful. In 1988 the British American Tobacco has wrote to the Ugandan government that the message from the warning labels should be not so strong. But from that time the company has realized the bad health effects that are caused by smoking. Mr. Karugaba is demanding clear messages about what smoking cigarettes could lead to. The antismoking movement in Africa has advanced in the last years; lawsuits where individual smokers are implicated are something usual.

Because the company was worried about its business and image it has started a public relation campaign. Uganda has its own Monitor, an independent newspaper that leads the population to discussions about smoking.

But in the same time Moses Ali, who is the minister of industry, trade and tourism has invited the population to smoke like it is something related to patriotism. He also said that no one is forced to smoke cigarettes, but if there is someone that would like to do this, he is welcome, because the state will get taxes from them.

The most known cheerleader of all B.A.T. was Mr. Museveni, and he said that the tobacco company is the best things that ever happened to a country that is so destitute. Mr. Museveni advised everyone to smoke but not to inhale the smoke, because it causes cancer. And he also said that Europeans have cancer problems because they inhale the smoke, His father has smoked for 70 years but stayed alive by not inhaling the smoke from the cigarettes. But in Africa there are bigger health problems than the tobacco usage: for example AIDS, malaria and others.
